Real Madrid have seen a number of their legends steadily leave in recent years. Karim Benzema became the latest name on that list when he left the club where he spent 14 seasons to join Al-Ittihad. Very few remain from the team that won the Champions League threepeat under the management of Zinedine Zidane.

The only two protagonists remaining from that era are Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. While the latter could still sign an extension with the club, this feels like the Croatian icon's last season in the Royal White jersey.

He was heavily linked with a move away last summer itself. But eventually, decided to remain at Real Madrid. He turned down some lucrative offers to do that.

As reported by AS, Modric rejected an offer of €300 million for three seasons last summer. Al-Hilal wanted him, but he renewed for Real Madrid.

It is a decision that Modric might have been regretting early on in the season, as he was struggling to get into the starting XI and was mostly being used as a substitute. But as the campaign has progressed and the injuries have piled up, the one-time Ballon d'Or winner has gotten his place back in the team.

He is a starter once again and nobody can claim that Modric is not delivering. Even at 38 years of age, he has been one of Real Madrid's best players recently. The team have lost just one game this season so far. The proof is in the pudding, as they say.

So, even when everybody is fit and available, it would be difficult for Carlo Ancelotti to drop Modric back to the bench. Despite that, it is hard to see Real Madrid handing the Croatian legend another contract extension. It does not take long for situations to change in football though. So never say never.
