Real Madrid have had a real problem over the years about giving academy prospects a fighting chance to shine. Not since the days of Iker Casillas have Los Merengues consistently been allowing homegrown talents to shine, and even players like Dani Carvajal had to first blossom on loan before becoming legends at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Alvaro Arbeloa has been reprimanded behind the scenes by president Florentino Perez for giving so many minutes to the academy stars like Miguel Angel and Thiago Pitarch this season, but when you watch what players like Jacobo Ramon and Ballon d'Or sleeper Nico Paz are doing for Como in Serie A - or even how well Antonio Blanco is carrying the load for Deportivo Alaves - you really have to wonder if Los Merengues are doing their youth a disservice.
In light of Paz's huge breakout in Italy, the elite clubs in European football are increasingly watching Real Madrid's best prospects more closely. And according to a new report from MARCA, via the Madrid Zone, Real Madrid center back prospect Joan Martinez, often compared to Sergio Ramos internally, is being increasingly placed on the radar of PSG/
PSG and Real Madrid are not good friends
Real Madrid and PSG used to have a real rivalry in the Champions League, but now that Kylian Mbappe has joined the Santiago Bernabeu, the two clubs have reversed course. PSG are now based on the power of friendship and winning Champions League titles with young, exciting stars, while Real Madrid have inflated egoes, wages, and high profile losses. The two clubs have reversed course.
Per MARCA, Martinez is felt to fall in line with PSG's new goal of going for ascending talents around Europe, and PSG are looking for a full purchase. They do not want to share 50 percent of the rights so that Real Madrid can buy the player back on the cheap once he becomes a star, as they will almost certainly do for Nico Paz this summer.
Due to injury and Real Madrid's own unwillingness to engage in a full youth movement with their homegrown stars, Joan Martinez has barely gotten a sniff of the Real Madrid lineup despite their obvious deficiencies on the defensive side of the ball.
Betraying Real Madrid for PSG seems outlandish, but if the Parisians offer the better opportunity, then Los Blancos must be afraid. PSG may finally force Florentino Perez and Real Madrid to take playing time and opportunity for Martinez seriously, and that will be a net positive for the club in light of their lack of defensive quality.
