PSG just gave Real Madrid another important reason to win the Champions League again

It was not easy for Luis Enrique's juggernaut, but PSG were able to win back to back Champions League titles on Saturday in Budapest, outlasting Arsenal and their dark arts under Mikel Arteta, which were in full and infuriating swing for the world to see, by winning in penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation. PSG have thus become the first team to win back to back Champions League titles since Real Madrid in 2018 - the last time they had Cristiano Ronaldo.

So now that PSG are Champions League winners for a second straight season and still have their core intact with arguably the world's best manager in tow, they are going to be gunning for a three peat. And the only team in the modern era to three peat the Champions League is that very same 2015/16 to 2017/18 Real Madrid outfit.

If Real Madrid needed any extra motivation to win the Champions League again next season after two straight seasons without any major silverware since landing PSG's former locker room destroyer Kylian Mbappe, which should never be the case, then preventing PSG from matching the record of that unparalleled Real Madrid squad of the mid to late 2010s is yet another reason to desperately want to win that title back.

PSG are the new Real Madrid

It is wild to see how PSG have become what Real Madrid were the last time the Royal Whites won the Champions League. They have a great team spirit, a well rounded squad, and play beautiful football together. Since Kylian Mbappe moved to the Spanish capital, now the roles have reversed and Real Madrid have become the PSG of old - toxic, self centered, mired in controversy and rumors of moles, and totally inept on the big stage while all trying to play for one player who offers little all around.

Real Madrid have fallen very far in their standards, whereas PSG are now setting the standard. But as much credit as Real Madrid have to begrudgingly give to the Parisians and even leading man Nasser Al-Khelaifi and former Barcelona treble winning manager Luis Enrique, they have to take a long hard look at themselves and their own failings these last two seasons.

Of course, if you ask any Madridista, they will tell you that while PSG are the envy of world football right now, nobody can touch the Gareth Bale, Sergio Ramos, Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric, Marcelo, and Toni Kroos peak teams of the three peat era. And it is up to Real to put a stop to PSG matching their old record.
