It's safe to say that this summer's FIFA Club World Cup over delivered based off expectations before the tournament started. The tournament featured a number of entertaining games, major upsets, and the occasional blowout win, with Real Madrid being on the receiving end of one.
From FIFA's perspective the tournament was a smashing success. It generated massive amounts of revenue, viewership, and attention to the footballing world. FIFA ended up distributing a total of $1 billion among the teams that participated in the tournament.
Given the amount of revenue generated by the tournament and the money each team was given, many teams are already waiting for the next edition of the Club World Cup. While the next edition is scheduled for 2029, there are a number of teams, Real Madrid included, who are calling for a major change to the format.
As being reported by ESPN, Real Madrid are one of many clubs from Europe and South America who are in favor of holding the newly revamped Club World Cup every two years, instead of every four years in order to boost revenue.
FIFA need to think about the players
There has been no official request made by the clubs as of yet to change the dating of the tournament, however FIFA view this change as unfeasible and is already making preparations for the next edition of the tournament in 2029.
Holding the Club World Cup every two years instead of four would not only be even more draining on the players who have already voiced their opinions on fixture congestion, but it could also mean conflict with other tournaments like the UEFA Euros and the Copa America.
Los Blancos took home a total of $82.5 million after reaching the semi-finals before their embarrassing 4-0 loss to PSG. When it comes to the next edition in 2029, FIFA is already planning it, with Qatar being the rumored host country.
However, much like the 2022 World Cup, it could have to be played in the winter due to the hot temperatures so it remains to be seen if that would be feasible for the clubs.
