Real Madrid need to upgrade their midfield this summer transfer window. Every single Madridista knows this point to be true, and regardless of what happens with transfer listed players like Eduardo Camavinga and Dani Ceballos, Real need a totally different kind of profile to help them get back to that next level as Champions of Europe.
It is no coincidence that Real Madrid have not been the same since that 2023/24 season when Toni Kroos left on top of his game as a Champions League winner, and things got even worse from both a technical quality and leadership perspective in the middle of the park this past summer with the departure of his even more legendary partner Luka Modric.
According to a report from L'Equipe, via the Madrid Zone, Real Madrid are considering signing two midfielders this summer transfer window. One of the profiles Real Madrid want is a cerebral and technical player who is already accomplished in European football at the highest level and can organize the entire team's play.
Real Madrid need a conductor like Toni Kroos
If that profile sounds familiar when saying it back out loud, then that's because it sounds awfully like the legendary pairing of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos that Real sorely miss. There is a distinct lack of control for Real Madrid, leadership, and quality of the build up phases. Arda Guler is a great creator but does not do a whole lot at a high level in midfield, while Jude Bellingham and Fede Valverde are much better engines than actual orchestrators.
These kinds of profiles are in massive demand but very, very hard to find in world football. Maybe the best bet Real Madrid have is Rodri, who has openly flirted with the Merengues, but the Spanish international may be a tough buy for the Royal Whites if Manchester City drive too hard of a bargain for their seemingly perennial Champions League rivals.
At all costs, Real Madrid need more quality in the middle of the park. They need someone like what Vitinha is for PSG or Joshua Kimmich for Bayern Munich or Pedri for Barcelona. Real Madrid need their own orchestral conductor, and they are still searching for the heir to Kroos whom they could never even conceive of finding while he was still playing.
Real Madrid fans all want this same profile brought to the club, and Juni Calafat's tall order this summer will be finding that exact player.
