Real Madrid are reeling right now. They did not win any trophies this season, and they already lost their chance at both cups this season by losing to Barcelona and Albacete. And after falling 2-1 to Mallorca while Barcelona beat rivals Atletico Madrid 2-1 by the same score, Real Madrid are very close to falling second fiddle to their most hated adversaries yet again. And in the Champions League, that same score line, 2-1, has claimed the Merengues in the first leg of their biggest rivalry matchup in Europe vs. Bayern Munich.

Maybe Florentino Perez is trying to stay ahead of the curve, and maybe he was already thinking about all this beforehand (he probably was), but it sounds like the president is contemplating a real organizational shakeup at Real Madrid.

According to a report from Cadena SER, via the Madrid Zone, Real Madrid are considering hiring a sporting director for the first time in many years. Currently, the club does not have a sporting director, as the role is fulfilled by the general director and Florentino's established right hand man Jose Angel Sanchez aka "JAS", a skilled negotiator and talent identifier.

Real Madrid want a sporting director

When Real Madrid were recruiting Kylian Mbappe hard in 2022, they were kicking around the idea of landing one of the world's finest sporting directors, Luis Campos, but they ultimately were not able to hire him since the former Monaco man landed back with the player he scouted for them to superstardom years ago, joining Mbappe with PSG as part of Mbappe's demands of staying with the Ligue 1 giants.

Now a handful of years later, Real Madrid are thinking about adding more structure and another strong voice to the team. There is no word yet on who it could be, but Real Madrid often do best with people who understand the culture of the team. Not every former Madridista works out, like Xabi Alonso, but many like Zinedine Zidane, Raul, Roberto Carlos, and Alvaro Arbeloa have been successful in different roles backstage as coaches or executives - or just ambassadors.

Florentino Perez always has huge ambitions for Real Madrid and never, ever shies away from making moves that could potentially take his beloved club to the next level. A move for a sporting director could bring more connections and bargaining power to the able, but they just have to make sure they land the right guy to avoid destablizing things.
