Real Madrid have been active in this transfer window - far more than they have been on average in the last few years.
Of course, under Xabi Alonso, Real Madrid signed a few players, but it seems like they are finally learning that the squad is not good enough, and have made more signings by the last week of July than they did in the entire transfer window last year.
Jose Mourinho is getting the special treatment (get it?) in his second stint - at least in terms of transfers, which is good because the club desperately needed these new players.
However, despite that, they have still made mistakes. The good thing is that there is still a lot of time to fix those mistakes. That is exactly what the club is trying to do this week with Rodri.
Real Madrid are finally realising their biggest mistake of this transfer window
As reported by David Ornstein late last week, Real Madrid are exploring a move to sign Rodri from Manchester City in the following weeks. In fact, they are counting on Rodri for next season, and presuming him as a part of their squad for it.
Real Madrid have known about Rodri's interest in joining them for the last few months. There have been various flirtatious quotes from the Spanish midfielder that hint at how he would love to play for Los Blancos at some point.
Despite knowing this, the club never acted on the signing the player - even more so when he would have been available for cheaper than whatever Real Madrid would have to pay for him now.
It was reported that Florentino Perez was not convinced by the potential Rodri signing, and it was one of the reasons why the club was not pushing to sign him before.
Now, though, according to MARCA, Real Madrid are finally realising that they need Rodri in the squad.
The truth is, before the World Cup, Rodri did have some bad performances for Manchester City. His fitness level, as well as his level for matches was unknown, which is why many fans were hesitant on seeing their club bring him in, too.
Rodri's brilliant campaign for Spain would have lifted that price up by a lot, and now, Real Madrid would have to pay considerably more than they would have wanted for a 30-year-old midfielder in the last year of his contract. Not to mention PSG's involvement would also have a pretty significant impact.
However, Rodri was still a profile that Real Madrid have desperately needed for the last two years. His long-range passing, understanding of the game and how he is able to control the tempo effortlessly, the club has not seen a profile like him since the departure of Toni Kroos, and getting him for a much cheaper price at that point, when his level was supposedly unknown to others, would have still been worth it.
They should have signed Rodri back when he was available, but whatever Perez had in mind at the time was a mistake that the club should have never made, not for a profile whose lacking has given them so much trouble over the years.
At his worst level, he is a good profile to have when you need to bring in some control. At his best, he is the best at what he does. Either of those things helps Real Madrid. And it is good that they are finally realising it.
