Real Madrid left back Ferland Mendy has gone down with the same injury to his tendon in the proximal right thigh that required surgery last year, and, just like last year, the ultimate outcome will be the same for the Frenchman.
Because according to a new report from MARCA, via Madrid Xtra, Mendy is going to need surgery again on this injury. That will make it complicated for Real Madrid to sell him this summer transfer window, pretty much ensuring the left back will remain a part of the squad for the 2026/27 season.
So unfortunately, while Mendy's latest injury should be a last straw of sorts and the setting in of the sad reality, which should have honestly already been in place, that Real cannot rely on him and need to sell, they simply will not be able to logistically.
Ferland Mendy's injury is too serious to transfer
If Mendy is going to be out for several months because of this surgery and unable to play, potentially until close to 2027 if the injury course is similar to what it was last year, then no team is going to want to acquire him.
Nevermind the fact that Mendy is almost never able to actually get on the pitch after injury, and, as was the case this time around, he usually only comes back for a game or two before getting injured immediately afterwards. When you factor in the wages Ferland Mendy generates at Real Madrid, the only teams that may be interested are those in Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
At this point, Mendy's career course looks like that of a player who is closer to retirement than stardom, which is an unfortunate statement to make about the 30 year old. Mendy is under contract with Real Madrid until the 2027/28 season, which is really a failure of squad planning to have such an injury prone player tied up in the club for that long.
When he is actually on the pitch, Mendy is clearly the best left back at Real Madrid, which is a status he affirmed in his brief time on the pitch this year against Manchester City in the Champions League. And he has been important to multiple La Liga and Champions League victories since joining for 50 million euros in 2019 from Lyon. But his continued importance, despite all the injuries, is only further emphasis on the problems at left back that have not been resolved. Real Madrid can't count on Mendy, but, now, they can't get rid of him either. They are stuck.
