Real Madrid could sign one of the best midfielders in the world right now for a mere nine million euros, as they have a buy back clause on Como star Nico Paz. Everything about how Real handled Paz to this point was perfect, as they cultivated the right landing spot for their best academy prospect and watched him flourish as the centerpiece player for Cesc Fabregas, becoming the very best player in all of Serie A as a he pulled the underdogs up to a historic Champions League qualification.
And that is precisely what makes everything that is happening now so frustrating and frightening for Real Madrid fans. The club is running the risk of losing one of their biggest talents, a player who outperformed literally all of their midfielders (and players overall, really) last season, instead of giving him a chance to compete.
Now, if Paz does not want to compete just yet, that is an entirely different story. And if he wants to finish out the story he has started with Como by leading them to success in the Champions League, then it would make all the sense in the world for Real Madrid to allow it to happen. After all, a player with more Champions League seasoning is always more valuable to Madrid when he comes back.
Real Madrid are not thinking straight
But Real Madrid are instead strongly considering the idea of buying Nico Paz back just to sell him for no purpose other than making money, even though they could stand to make double that money in a few years - or make even more than that off Paz helping them win Champions Leagues again.
According to reporting from El Chiringuito, via Madrid Xtra, the Paz situation boils down to this. Real Madrid have told Paz they are going to buy him back, but it is up to him if he wants to stay. If he wants to go back to Como, they would have to pay to buy him back. And if not Como, then he would be sold to the Premier League.
Selling Paz to the Premier League sounds like a total disaster, as does selling him to an alternative route, which would be Como's Serie A rivals Inter Milan, who have been very interested in signing the Argentinian international in the background for months.
The Premier League sides that would sign Paz, as well as Inter Milan, would be Champions League rivals for Real Madrid. Honestly, the last thing Real need to do is sell one of their most valuable young players and one of the top five players in the world from the 2025/26 season to a team that can totally hurt them for years and years with Paz as a centerpiece in the Champions League knockouts. Real Madrid have to think very carefully about how they plan their next move here.
