So much attention has been spent on the big names of Real Madrid with the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Fede Valverde mired in controversy, but so little attention has been spent on the actual biggest problem on the pitch, which reared its ugly head within the first 20 minutes of the Clasico.
Real Madrid's defense has been terrible for years now. Even in 2023/24 when Real Madrid won the Champions League title, Carlo Ancelotti was rightfully warning Florentino Perez about the state of the defense. But Perez took Ancelotti for granted and the fact that the legendary Italian could still win with bit players defensively, as Eder Militao's series of injuries have taken a real toll.
Eventually, Ancelotti could no longer make up for the defensive issues, and this season, the additions of Dean Huijsen and Alvaro Carreras have done little to quell the ills of the back four in the immediate. Barcelona tore Real Madrid to shreds defensively with Huijsen joining Militao on the injured list, and the duo of Antonio Rudiger and Raul Asencio just might be the worst to have ever started for Real Madrid in the last 30 years.
Real Madrid need a new defense
Now, according to a report from Diario AS, via the Madrid Zone, Florentino Perez and Real Madrid are finally going to get series about the defense. Real Madrid are reportedly planning on signing three to four defensive players in total this summer transfer window, with a priority being placed on experienced players.
Real Madrid are probably going to have to sell in order to buy players, but the funny thing is there are already at least four players on the defense who could be cleared out without anyone noticing. Fran Garcia is a nice guy, but he isn't good enough for Real Madrid. David Alaba, Antonio Rudiger, and Dani Carvajal are fake leaders and wastes of space in terms of talent. Raul Asencio is a reckless headcase who is unfit to be in the squad. That's five already. And Ferland Mendy may be impossible to move due to injury, but he's another player who is expendable.
It is telling that Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold are the only two non youth academy players even worth rostering for th Real Madrid defense. This unit is shambolic and makes everyone look worse. Kylian Mbappe not defending is a problem, of course, but an even bigger problem is that the actual defenders can barely even defend themselves.
