Real Madrid had been in talks for Nico Paz for months regarding the best future plan for the center midfielder who had just come off an incredible season for Como in which he led the Serie A underdogs to a historic Champions League qualification.

Paz communicated to Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid that he preferred to stay with Como for another season to get some more experience before challenging for minutes at Real Madrid, seeing as how he did not envision himself being able to get much playing time initially at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Although Como did not make it easy and gave a brief opening for Inter Milan and Premier League clubs to think about a permanent transfer at Real Madrid's valuation of 60 million euros, the Serie A side and Real Madrid were able to come to a compromise on a deal. Regulations prevented Real from owning 50 percent of Paz's rights after this transfer, but Los Blancos will have an 80 million euro buy back clause on the player valid for 2027.

Real Madrid will be bringing Nico Paz back

According to a report from Jose Felix Diaz of Diario AS, via the Madrid Zone, Real Madrid are so enamored with Nico Paz still even after the, technically, permanent transfer to Como that they are still certain he will be a player they bring back in 2027.

That means, though, that Real Madrid have made a big gamble backing Paz as a player and his continued development. Because they could have brought the Argentinian international back this summer for just nine million euros. And they could have just kept him on loan at Como this season and bought him back for ten million euros in 2027.

Real Madrid are willing to sell Paz now for 60 million euros, keep him at Como for another season, and buy him back for 80 million euros next year and lose 10 million euros more than they would have in order to both get cash now and keep Paz secure with his Serie A side with that psychological confidence that he is already a 60 million euro player.

Los Blancos are gambling that Paz will want to come back and will be worth 80 million euros, at a minimum, by the time he comes back next season. But the thing is, it is not a wild gamble to make on a 21 year old player who was already arguably a top five footballer in Europe last season. He was Serie A's best player and had 18 goal contributions with all around great midfield play, and if he can prove to be that good in 2026/27 with a season of Champions League football under his belt, then this is a gamble worth making from a Madrid perspective.
