One of Real Madrid's main goals this summer was to reinforce their backline, following the disastrous back-to-back trophyless season, which saw the team leak goals for fun. The club brought in all of Marc Cucurella, Ibrahima Konate, and Denzel Dumfries, giving Jose Mourinho a completely new-look backline. However, the defense still looks incredibly shaky, and as a result, Real Madrid are already eyeing their next defensive recruit, one that would be a solid option to bring to the Bernabeu.
As being reported by Bild, Real Madrid are showing great interest in Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah as Los Blancos are still looking to patch holes in their backline they failed to patch this summer. Real Madrid appreciate the versatility of the defender, but would most likely call on him to play at center-back, as that is the area in the backline where Real Madrid are having the most issues, and it isn't getting any easier for the club.
Real Madrid considering another England international to reinforce their backline
While Dean Huijsen and Ibrahima Konate have been performing well as a partnership so far, outside of them, Real Madrid's center-back situation is a nightmare. Eder Militao is still out recovering from hamstring surgery and will hopefully be back soon, but he has had a horrible injury history over the last three years.
Real Madrid do still have Antonio Rudiger in the squad, but at 33 years old, he is coming up on the end of his career and isn't at the level he once was. And finally, we have Raul Asencio, who has just undergone surgery and will be out for a number of months, leaving Real Madrid thin in the center of the defense.
With Rudiger likely to leave after this season, and Real Madrid surely going to do everything they can to force Asencio out too, bringing in Quansah would be a deal that makes sense for Real Madrid. He's still only 23-years-old and has shown glimpses that he has lots of talent in him. He's a regular starter for Bayer Leverkusen as well as a regular feature for Thomas Tuchel in the England National Team, showing the trust he has from the manager.
Real Madrid are looking towards the next generation of Los Blancos, so bringing in a young, talented prospect like Quansah to replace the old guard of Antonio Rudiger would be a sign of intent that the club means business.
Quansah brings pace and physicality to the backline and would be a strong option to bring off the bench or even slot into the starting lineup if Huijsen or Konate are going through a bit of a slump. Quansah would join his England international teammate Jude Bellingham as well as former Liverpool teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold, something that could sweeten the pot for the player to make the move.
However, should Real Madrid want to make a move for Quansah a reality, they'll have to put up quite the fight. Chelsea and Arsenal are rumored to also be interested in the defender, and on top of that, Liverpool retains a €70 million buy-back option as part of his transfer to Leverkusen.
Whether or not Real Madrid will actually bring in Quansah remains unknown at the moment, but given their current situation at center-back, it would be a smart move for the club to make or risk falling further behind their rivals.
