Real Madrid are going to have to get serious about upgrading their defense this summer transfer window. It is an area of weakness that has existed for years and was papered over by the brilliance of Carlo Ancelotti, who won two Champions League titles under those circumstances.
His predecessor, Jose Mourinho, is coming back to right a ship that is sinking, as Real Madrid are rife with issues from weaknesses in the squad, such as those in defense, and weaknesses in the locker room. Mourinho is going to want to see sweeping upgrades made to this defense.
It looks like Real Madrid are already under way to making one substantial upgrade to their back line in an unsurprising way. According to a report from Fabrizio Romano, via Madrid Xtra, Real Madrid are set to formalize their interest in Liverpool center back Ibrahima Konate, who is now officially a free agent, as they have started talks with Konate's reps.
Real Madrid are not messing around
Konate is perhaps the most obvious defensive upgrade Real Madrid could make this summer transfer window. Jose Mourinho and the fans want players at multiple positions. Two center backs, including an elite player, and then a left back and a right back to cover for Trent Alexander-Arnold are the four signings Madridistas would ideally like to see coming to the Bernabeu this year.
While Konate is not at the top of the wish list - Inter Milan's Alessandro Bastoni appears to be Plan A for most Madrid fans right now - they will still gladly take him. And in conjunction with another, it is hard to envision a better secondary signing at center back for Real Madrid to make this summer than the French free agent.
Ibrahima Konate is a man with two Premier League titles to his name, and he has been among Europe's best since evenn before he joined Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool more than a handful of years ago, as he was excellent for RB Leipzig in the late 2010s.
Real Madrid's biggest need is the center back position, and Konate, though he did not look like it in a disastrous 2025/26 season for Liverpool as a team, is a world-class player on his day. He is composed, intelligent, and technically prolific in his role. It makes 100 percent sense for Real Madrid to be sitting at the bargaining table, and they are honestly the early favorites for Konate.
