Dean Huijsen is encountering a tough start to his Real Madrid career. The Spanish center-back arrived from Bournemouth with his stock sky-high following impressive performances in the Premier League.
The 20-year-old has failed to replicate his consistent displays in England during the early stages of his Bernabeu spell. He has come under huge criticism and a former La Liga manager has even suggested he isn't good enough for Los Blancos.
Huijsen's latest dissapointment came in Madrid's 4-1 win over Real Sociedad last weekend. He gave away a penalty which allowed the visitors to equalize.
There are reports suggesting the Spaniard's place in Alvaro Arbeloa's team is now at risk. But it''s his potential competition who has made sure to support the youngster during a difficult period.
Huijsen has a friend in Rudiger
Antonio Rudiger started the win against Sociedad after returning from a lengthy spell on the sidelines. The German defender's return has come just in time ahead of a Champions League playoff against Benfica.
According to Marca, Rudiger supported Huijsen shortly after he gave away the foul that led to Mikel Oyarzabal levelling against the hosts. He kept a close eye on his teammate throughout the game and offered him encouragement.
This is admirable from Rudiger who knows just how much pressure comes with representing Los Merengues. He has experienced plenty of criticism throughout his career but shown resilience which he is evidently using to help Huijsen get through a tough spell.
Rudiger also made sure to celebrate with Huijsen once Vinicius Junior put Madrid back in front from the penalty spot. He clearly is putting the team first and trying to ensure his fellow center-back doesn't dwell on mistakes.
Huijsen needs time to adapt
Huijsen's arrival didn't come cheaply which is why there were such high expectations over the Netherlands-born defender. Madrid spent €59.5 million to bring him to the Bernabeu and he is still getting used to La Liga football aswell as the magnitude of playing for Los Blancos.
Rudiger's return could be beneficial for the Spaniard even if it means spending time on the bench. Getting him out of the spotlight in the final stretch of the season will only help him work behind the scenes to prove his doubters wrong.
Huijsen has made 26 appearances across competitions this season, posting one goal and two assists. He is still at the very start of his career and the club are backing him to come good.
