Spanish businesman and founder of Cox Energy Enrique Riquelme is a bold, ambitious man with a wild plan to dethrone Florentino Perez as Real Madrid president, as he wants to take advantage of a weak moment in the club's history to steal away the power from a man who has become an institution in the Spanish capital after learning from his own exploits in the Galacticos era.

While Real Madrid fans have valid concerns about Florentino Perez after his obsession with Kylian Mbappe and subsequent move that tanked the team and disrputed a locker room that won the Champions League and La Liga just two years ago before going trophyless since. All the while, Perez kicked off Carlo Ancelotti after not signing any of the players Carletto wisely requested before burning through young manager and former Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso in record time (and then his right back teammate Alvaro Arbeloa shortly afterwards).

That said, most Madridistas do not view Riquelme as a serious candidate or his campaign as much more than lip service, and many are upset that Riquelme is even running at all, since it could cost the club Jose Mourinho or otherwise destabilize them further during a fragile time.

Enrique Riquelme has bold claims

But Riquelme is doing his best to get the moment, and he is taking a page from Perez's old ambitious playbook from when he seized the presidency by promising big things for Real Madrid fans like a top manager of his own or a pair of blockbuster signings.

In an interview with The Athletic's Mario Cortegana and Guillermo Rai, Enrique Riquelme boldly told the Real Madrid fans that he has two massive signings planned for them if he were to become the next president and replace Florentino Perez.

Riquelme said, ā€œTwo signings are already finalised, and several others are being worked on under the same sporting direction and within the same professional structure.ā€

That is a really, really strong statement and almost a guarantee in that Perez and Luis Figo vein from him. It's not as bold and specific, though, which is why Real Madrid fans aren't buying it, because the signings that he is hyping up as game changers are still vague. Riquelme only said, to COPE, that one of them is a top player on the Spanish national team at the World Cup this summer, which is really weirding out Real Madrid fans. Because it isn't going to be Lamine Yamal or someone from Barcelona; it could just be Aymeric Laporte, for example.

The hype sounds nice, but it would be better if Riquelme could give concrete plans and names. Otherwise, Real Madrid fans won't buy him as a serious candidate to Perez, who has brought in those kinds of names throughout his career.
