Real Madrid need to have a big summer transfer window in order to set up incoming manager Jose Mourinho up for a success in his return to the Santiago Bernabeu dugout after previously becoming a legend at the club a decade before.

Mou wants the club, understandably, to overhaul the defense after years of simply not being good enough at the back for a Real Madrid team. But Real Madrid also need quality in the midfield, and they need quality now - veteran stars who can come in and raise the floor of this squad, rather than gambles on over priced young players who may not pan out.

Manchester City star Rodri is one player Real Madrid appear to have high on their wish list this summer, while another big name in the Premier League, Enzo Fernandez of Chelsea, is another opportunity. And Jose Mourinho may be pining for Morten Hjlumand from his Portuguese top flight, as he was instrumental for rivals Sporting CP again this season.

A Man City star that makes little sense

Real Madrid were recently offered the opportunity to, again, sign Bernardo Silva, who may be a bigger topic for the Merengues since they have repaired the relationship with Jorge Mendes, Silva's agent, after his highest profile coaching client, Mourinho, signed a new deal with the Merengues.

According to a report from Jose Felix Diaz of Diario AS, via Madrid Xtra, Real Madrid were actually offered the opportunity to sign Bernardo Silva a month ago before the Jose Mourinho rumors really heated up. But even at that time, Real Madrid told Silva, an impending free agent, thanks but no thanks to a summer 2026 transfer to the Santiago Bernabeu.

About five years ago, the versatile and intelligent Silva would have been a perfect signing by Real Madrid to strengthen their squad and weaken a Champions League rival. Now, at the age of 32 when the 2026/27 La Liga season would start, Silva is slowly past it, and there is a reason why Man City are letting him walk this summer.

Of course, Silva and his reps would want him offered to the biggest club in the world, and of course Real Madrid would want to look for options elsewhere. He's not the profile of midfielder they want, nor even the caliber of midfielder they want at this stage of his career. Real Madrid have better 8's in Fede Valverde, Jude Bellingham, and even Eduardo Camavinga. And he cannot play on the wings anymore, nor as he been able to for years. Real are clearly better off looking elsewhere.
