It is difficult for Real Madrid fans to know what to make of Kyilan Mbappe. On the one hand, everyone wants to see such a wonderful individual talent succeed, as Mbappe's quality can bring a lot of success and joy the club, in theory. But the practical and theoretical have never quite matched up for a player who failed to win a single Champions League title at PSG despite star studded teams built around him, and now that same PSG is headed for a second straight Champions League title without him.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid won two Champions Leagues in three years before Mbappe's arrival, as well as two La Liga titles and a Copa del Rey, but now they are about to go without a trophy for a second straight season. And the same issues of locker room discussions, referendums on the captaincy, leaks, moles, and all the like are plaguing a now disunified Real Madrid locker room in the same way that PSG were torn apart in the final disastrous years of Mbappe in Paris.
Now, Real Madrid fans can't help but wonder if Mbappe and his bloated entourage are causing the same strife, and recent events have caused them to question the Frenchman further. Although the main source of controversy lately has been the locker room brouhaha between star midfielders Fede Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni, their fight can only go so far in shielding Mbappe, who was the main man under the microscope in the week before that duel broke out.
Kylian Mbappe isn't back after all
Kylian Mbappe was supposedly out for the rest of the season with a hamstring injury, went on vacation to Italy with his partner, got a ton of backlash, and then all of a sudden was back in training for the Barcelona game with many saying he would be cleared to play.
But now, just as swiftly, Mbappe is out and not called up to El Clasico. According to a report from MARCA, via the Madrid Zone, Mbappe was training with the team until the very last five minutes of the training session. He then pulled up with discomfort and said he could not continue. And now he is not a part of the Matchday squad.
It is hard to fault someone if they are injured, but that is the thing about how Real Madrid fans feel about Mbappe. There is hardly any proof or wrongdoing or issues, but there always seems to be a controversy at the exact strangest time. Mbappe was supposedly very injured, then when people started questioning if he was just phoning it in for the World Cup, he comes back.
Now after all this drama around the team, at the last possible second, he was pulled out. Raul Asencio did the same thing this season and got punished by Antonio Rudiger and Alvaro Arbeloa for it. Real Madrid fans can only wonder what on earth is going on with Mbappe, if they are going to get any concrete information on what is going on with his injury status, and if they are all having the wool pulled over their eyes.
