Kylian Mbappe is damaging his own reputation at the moment. Real Madrid lost to Atletico Madrid in La Liga on Sunday, and while Mbappe was not the worst player on the pitch for the team, he certainly wasn’t the best.
He did not do enough to warrant the behavior fans have towards Jude Bellingham, which is that of a warrior who tried his hardest.
Mbappe was sulking from one end of the penalty box to the other on every occasion, and it did not seem to fans that he was the leader everyone claims he is.

For a second, let’s forget about that. Let’s try to move on from the derby defeat, and see how the player is able to bounce back from a match like that.
Would it be better to keep his head down and play well for France, so that he can come back in good condition and play well for Real Madrid?
Or, would it be better to give three interviews in two days and talk about your non-obsession with the Ballon d’Or?
Well, Mbappe chose the second option – and it is not going down well with fans. Real Madrid are in such a sensitive position right now. This would be a third year without a trophy if they fail to win anything. After a defeat of such magnitude, is it really the best time to be giving out interviews about individual accolades?
Lamine Yamal and Mbappe have both been talking about the same thing, and it is getting infuriating for the fanbases of the teams they play for. It is always the topic of discussion for some reason, and Mbappe keeps giving out these interviews that, after a match like the one against Atletico, fans would be furious with.
Why is he focusing on individual accolades when his own team, that has not won anything in two years, is struggling so much on the pitch? Why is he not able to defend, work hard and press well, but is the first person to beat his own drum of winning the Ballon d’Or? When he could not score a goal for Real Madrid against Atletico, when it mattered so much to the fans that he did?
These are the questions fans are asking Mbappe online. The anger from fans towards Mbappe is reaching a tipping point, and these interviews will only take it past the line.
Real Madrid need more on-the-pitch stuff from Mbappe. If he truly wants to win the Ballon d’Or one day, he needs to stop talking about it and start playing the way Ousmane Dembele played last season, or French compatriot Karim Benzema did in 2022. That is how you win trophies: by working hard on both ends of the pitch, winning trophies and having a huge impact on the team.
Right now, Mbappe is only doing one of those things. It is not enough. Even if it is, he should not be mentioning it every second of the day.
