Real Madrid have just learned that they are not in the clear yet, even with the signing of Dean Huijsen. They need more centre-backs, and they must understand that the need is immediate, not something to be addressed next season.
Raul Asencio has shown that he cannot be relied upon just yet. He has begun to play as recklessly as he did in Castilla. If he learns to stop doing that, very good. But at the moment, we cannot guarantee such a change in attitude.
William Saliba of Arsenal has long been a major target for Los Blancos to strengthen the defense. He was seen as part of the club’s near future, but his recent comments have shattered those hopes.
In a recent interview, Saliba was asked about his contract renewal situation at the Emirates. He replied, “I hope it gets done soon.”
William Saliba may sign Arsenal renewal soon
Those words are more than enough to indicate that Saliba is not looking beyond Arsenal at this time. Real Madrid must now look elsewhere, though they do not need to look beyond the Premier League.
They have the perfect target in Merseyside: Ibrahima Konate. He has repeatedly rejected contract renewal offers from Liverpool and is now heavily rumoured to be pursued by Real Madrid this summer instead of next.
I believe one centre-back signing would be enough for this season, and Konate is the answer. Dean Huijsen and Konate could form a strong starting pair, while Raul Asencio and Antonio Rudiger can serve as decent backups, provided they cut down on the frequent errors that currently cost them a place in the starting lineup.
Eder Militao is, of course, still there, but his fitness cannot be guaranteed after multiple injuries. If he returns to his old form, it would be as good as a new signing.
