Real Madrid fans are used to Cristiano Ronaldo being an unfair target of criticism, and his usual haters, particularly the notoriously jealous Thierry Henry (who laughably says he is not the "real Ronaldo"), were out in full force after Portugal struggled to a 1-1 draw against an excellent (and surprisingly discredited) DR Congo. Roberto Martinez's tactics of having the wingers hug the touch line and taking the game away from the midfield playmakers bit Portugal hard, but despite his clever movement off the ball, Cristiano was made to pay in the media for questionable tactical decisions.

It did not help Ronaldo that Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, and Kylian Mbappe were all scoring goals, but, as usual, it did not take long for the Portuguese legend to get the last laugh on his opportunistic critics.

Portugal blew out Uzbekistan 5-0, and Cristiano was an ever present danger, scoring two brilliant goals with brilliant finishes. Real Madrid supporters knew that Ronaldo would rise to the occasion and vindicate their continued support, even years after he had left, and they also know that these same individuals like Henry will do their best to jump through hoops not to credit his qualities.

Cristiano Ronaldo is a record machine

But the "factos" speak for themselves. With his brace for Portugal, Cristiano Ronaldo broke four prestigious records at once. He is now the leading Portuguese goal scorer in World Cup history, surpassing the incredible Eusebio with his 9th and 10th career World Cup goals. And with 10 World Cup goals, he is now the only player in the history of the game to have 10 goals at both the World Cup and the European Championships.

That is not all, though. Cristiano is the only player in history to have scored in six World Cups and will always be the first to accomplish this feat. And with two goals in one games, the 41 year old is now the oldest player in World Cup history to score a brace.

Every game and every gaol is another record for Ronaldo, and yet, puzzlingly, there are so many bitter individuals who would rather despise the man or boldly proclaim his early downfall than celebrate or at least acknowledge his accomplishments on the football pitch.

Cristiano showed incredible instincts off the ball on the first goal and even better finishing chops on the second. He and his Portuguese teammates played a great all around game, and for all that will be said by Henry and his gang of incompetent FOX analysts about how terrible Uzbekistan are, it is amazing to see superstars like Cristiano, Messi, Mbappe, Haaland, Harry Kane, and, yes, Lamine Yamal all bringing the fireworks on the world stage.
