Real Madrid are signing new players and also renewing those they believe will continue to add value. Thibaut Courtois is obviously one of those names, and his contract extension is only a matter of time.

But one contract decision by Los Blancos has puzzled fans. According to Fabrizio Romano, Madrid are very close to agreeing on a new contract for Brahim Díaz. But the question is: why?

Romano says that the player has already agreed to stay and extend, but his future at Madrid looks meek at best. He had interest from Liverpool and he can better minutes there.

He may not get the chances he needs to shine. He didn’t get many of them last season either.

Brahim is inconsistent and renewing his contract makes little sense

It is an apparent fact that Brahim is not the finest right wing option right now. He was very unreliable last season and cost Madrid the Copa Del Rey victory in the final against Barcelona.

Even when given chances, he fails to perform. Arda Guler is certainly superior to him at the position, and Xabi may even give the Turkish youngster first preference.

Furthermore, the signing of Franco Mastantuono eliminates Brahim's opportunity to play regular minutes. Mastantuono will start frequently and always ahead of Brahim.

And, despite his particularly poor performance, I feel Rodrygo deserves to be chosen ahead of Brahim. Rodrygo  is inventive and can be a good player on his best days, but Brahim hasn't demonstrated any of that lately.

Unless Xabi is planning to keep a lot of backups or play different teams for different competitions, like Zinedine Zidane did back in the day, this renewal makes very little sense - especially for the player himself.

This feeling is also echoed by Real Madrid fans on social media. Under Fabrizio Romano's post on X breaking the news, Madrid fans are clearly not having it. They simply can't understand the logic.

One replied, "Makes no sense to sign him when he’s one of their worst forwards and plays the same position as Rodrygo and guler. Sell brahim man."

Another fan aptly summarized the feeling I have about this renewal, "Go elsewhere and shine bro, stop playing in shadows. Good talent."
