Real Madrid are going to need to make some serious changes on the defensive side of the ball this summer to rebuild a unit that has been nowhere near good enough for years, even when Carlo Ancelotti won the Champions League in 2023/24. Los Blancos signed Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen, and Alvaro Carreras last summer, but only Trent is a sealed starter - and Carreras has been so poor these last few months in performance and attitude that he may not be long for Madrid if he keeps this up.
It's obvious that Real Madrid are going to need multiple new center backs to bolster their back four this summer transfer window, and a left back to replace the injured Ferland Mendy and compete with Carreras and Fran Garcia would also be wise.
But Real Madrid are also putting out feelers for right backs and have recently been linked to Brentford breakout star Michael Kayode, who has a totally different skill set to that of Alexander-Arnold. With Dani Carvajal officially set to walk away from the club, the only other right backs on the roster besides Trent are all youth academy players like David Jimenez.
Real Madrid are happy with Trent
Although there has been some speculation that Real Madrid could bring in someone like Kayode to compete with Trent Alexander-Arnold, the status of the Liverpool star as a starter for Los Blancos is totally safe. Jose Felix Diaz of Diario AS reports, via the Madrid Zone, that Real Madrid are very pleased with the job Trent is doing at right back. Their goal this summer transfer market is to sign a backup to support Trent, rather than think about displacing him as the No. 1 guy.
It makes sense, too. Although Trent took some time to get going, he has been fabulous in recent weeks, even performing at a solid level defensively despite the narrative against him that he can't play defense on on one.
And with Arda Guler injured, Trent has been, pretty easily, their best creator, and he is a real solution for Real Madrid from set pieces. His teasing deliveries, through balls, passes over the top, and early crosses like at Liverpool have been a delight, and if Kylian Mbappe were actually performing well, Trent should have triple the assists - anyone who actually watches the games can tell you that Trent is producing at least as good as advertised as a passer.
