Real Madrid are planning a major squad overhaul this summer. A number of players are expected to depart in preparation for a number of new arrivals as the club looks to bounce back following back-to-back trophyless seasons. We've already seen the departures of Dani Carvajal and David Alaba with other like Dani Ceballos and Fran Garcia also expected to be leaving in the summer. However, for one player in particular the club are torn on whether he should stay or go, and should he go, one club in particular has their eyes on him and it's a club no one would have seen coming.
As being reported by journalist Ekrem Konur on X, Turkish side Besiktas are targeting Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio on loan this summer. The Istanbul club are waiting to make a move for the defender as his future will be decided once the presidential election process concludes later this month. The players future is currently up in the air and with all the changes coming at Real Madrid this summer, a change of scenery could be coming for the 23-year-old.
Destination Istanbul for Raul Asencio?
Asencio burst onto the scene at the Bernabeu during the 24/25 season, getting called up from Castilla by Carlo Ancelotti in wake of a number of defensive injuries to Eder Militao, David Alaba, and Dani Carvajal with the 23-year-old making quite the debut season for Real Madrid. Asencio made 46 appearances across all competitions for Real Madrid last season and brought a similar style to Sergio Ramos which was something Real had been lacking since the legends departure.
However this season Asencio somewhat fell out of favor under both Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa both due to the reemergence of Eder Militao in the team as well as the arrival of Dean Huijsen in the summer and a somewhat underrated season from Antonio Rudiger. He only made 34 appearances this season and struggled with both injuries and illness' at time, causing him to fall back into his backup role.
The defender also didn't play particularly well when he was given opportunites and with some rumored attitude issues in the background as well, the club are considering the players fututre this summer as it could be best for both parties for some time away from the Bernabeu. Besiktas has been linked with a move for Asencio in the past and with all the changes coming, now would be the time for the Istabul side to make their move.
Still only 23-years-old Turkey would be an unusual destination as it's normally where players will go to finish their careers however it could prove useful for the youngster as well. He'd easily be a regular starter for Besiktas and could take the time to develop as a player away from all the pressure at the Bernabeu.
