Real Madrid managed to just about defeat Villarreal 2-1 away from home, with a really nice brace from Kylian Mbappe proving to be enough to win on the road.
Real Madrid have not always managed to beat Villarreal. They have struggled, especially in the last few years, as Villarreal have become a formidable side in Spanish football.
It is not just at home, Villarreal have given all the top three teams some sort of problem in the past, irrespective of whether it was home or away.
However, with Real Madrid's win against Villarreal, they have just broken a seven-year streak of not beating Villarreal away from home in LaLiga.
This was Real Madrid's first away win against Villarreal since February 2017
The last time Real Madrid managed to beat Villarreal away from home was when they had Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema as their forwards. It was a 3-2 comeback win where Ronaldo, Bale and Morata scored to guide Los Blancos to victory.
Ever since then, they have either lost or drawn in La Liga, and that finally changed on Saturday, when Real Madrid were able to defeat the Yellow Submarine.
They technically have defeated Villarreal in a major competition away from home before. In 2023 - another comeback win, this time led by Dani Ceballos, secured Real Madrid a place in the semi-finals of the Copa Del Rey, which they went on to eventually win. However, the streak is only in LaLiga.
The context and consequences are also what make this win extra special for Real Madrid fans. They were clearly far from their best physically after an exhausting penalty shootout win over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday.
To do this without even three days of rest is incredible, even for Real Madrid, and it was clear to see what Carlo Ancelotti thought of the whole thing, and why he said what he said.
