Real Madrid's chances of beating Manchester United to the signing of a new midfielder have reportedly improved. The club are expected to sign at least one new midfielder this summer amid dissapointing displays from Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga.

A new manager will likely be at the helm come the summer transfer window as Alvaro Arbeloa replaced Xabi Alonso on a caretaker basis. His deal is thought to expire at the end of the season, meaning Florentino Perez's transfer chiefs will probably be backing a new head coach.

The midfield is one of the most obvious areas that needs improvement and several players have been linked with Madrid. But Los Blancos also have the opportunity to sign a former Premier League star in January rather than the summer.

Real Madrid can beat Manchester United to midfielder

Fichajes reports that Ruben Neves is eyeing a move to the Estadio Bernabeu and has dreams of wearing a Los Merengues shirt. The Portuguese midfielder is currently playing his football out in Saudi Arabia with Al-Hilal but could be on the move this month.

Manchester United are also interested in the 28-year-old who could be available for around €20 million. He has impressed in Saudi and also has European experience as he previously spent time in the Premier League with Wolves.

Madrid are cautious about moving for Neves and are only willing to enter the race for the Portugal international in ideal financial circumstances. The Red Devils might view this as an advantage but the player's preference could prove crucial.

Neves could be a clever piece of business for Madrid and give Arbeloa options as he looks to guide Los Blancos to a successful end of the season. His profile is versatile and he's tidy on the ball, while confident on set pieces.

The Portuguese midfielder has made 13 appearances in the Saudi Pro League this season, scoring six goals and providing three assists. He could be an excellent option to rotate with Tchouameni and Camavinga.

Madrid need new faces

The difficult season that Madrid have experienced has mostly been blamed on player power. Rumors of rifts between Alonso and his players were constant during his seven months in charge.

Freshening up Arbeloa's squad could help not only give the Spaniard more options but also improve the mood at the Bernabeu. Neves is experienced and a likeable personality that could make him a hit with upset Madridistas.

Neves might be the only one to arrive in January, but that doesn't mean Madrid won't further strengthen their midfield. A new number six, such as Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton, would be an excellent acquisition.
