Real Madrid were able to beat AEK Athens on Wednesday night, but the win did not come without its challenges. The club really struggled at points, and it did not look like a win was going to come because of the way they were playing and because of how defeated they looked at certain points. By "defeated," it's not to say they accepted the loss, but they weren't playing like a team who wanted to win until the substitutions were made by the manager and some spark was added to the team.
Real Madrid were also missing a lot of creativity in attack, which usually goes away when Arda Güler is not on the pitch. That was the case once again on Wednesday because Güler was not even in the squad for the match. He was given a much-deserved rest, and the team had to make do without the Turkish international. Let's be honest, Real Madrid struggled. They struggled to create some chances in the first half because of the fact that they were missing their best chance creator.
Real Madrid are now incomplete without Arda Güler
It is all natural, and it should not come as a shock. It wasn't even a terrible performance from the team in that half, but that is the truth. Real Madrid were missing the quite obvious part about Güler's game. They are meant to be missing him because Güler is the creative hub of this team, and without him, the team clearly lacks moments of inspiration.
Güler's anticipation and tendency to bring out a game-changing pass in a blink of an eye is something that can unlock defences very quickly. In all of Real Madrid's laborious possession, they were missing a player who can do just that. Jude Bellingham was the only player who seemed to be doing that. There was no one else in the attack who was able to provide that final pass to the more fast-paced attackers like Yan Diomande, Vinícius Junior, and Kylian Mbappé.
This game basically means that Real Madrid know that they have to start Güler in most of the games they play now. That was always the case even before the game, but now seeing a Real Madrid team without the young superstar in the squad showed how desperately the team needs him at the moment.
That is not to say they cannot win without him, because they clearly did win. They will win without a certain spark and a certain type of creativity that they only get from Güler at the moment, and that won't change until they sign another player who can bring that too.
