Real Madrid have their eyes on Diogo Dalot of Man United and Trent Alexander-Arnold of Liverpool. Their preference is known in an ideal world.

Real Madrid have been linked with a transfer for Trent Alexander-Arnold for a long period of time. The English full-back has been on Real Madrid's radar since the summer. He was not signed then, due to Real Madrid eyeing a bargain transfer for Trent instead.

Trent Alexander-Arnold's contract at Liverpool expires at the end of this season. Therefore, he could be available to leave in the January transfer window for a bargain fee or, even better, for free at the end of the season.

If Trent decides to stay at Liverpool, Real Madrid have lined up Diogo Dalot of Man United as an alternative transfer.

According to an update from Relevo, Real Madrid are in talks with Man United over their stance on selling Diogo Dalot. The white club are aware that Man United will ask for €50m (£41.5m).

Interestingly, the report affirms that Trent Alexander-Arnold is the preferred option for Real Madrid. While the Spanish capital have lined up alternatives, they are exactly that: alternatives.

In an ideal world, Real Madrid would sign Trent Alexander-Arnold. In this world, they would forget about Diogo Dalot. However, we do not live in an ideal world, so Real Madrid must prepare their less ideal options.

As it stands, it is uncertain whether Trent Alexander-Arnold will choose Liverpool or Real Madrid. In the not-so-distant past, this would have been an easy choice. However, Arne Slot's high-flying start to life as Liverpool manager might have changed Trent's decision.

Either way, it is great to see that Real Madrid are considering their options. They refuse to roll over and let themselves be deflated by the bad Trent Alexander-Arnold news, if it comes.

Diogo Dalot is not the desirable option. However, he is a solid option nevertheless.
