Even though Alvaro Arbeloa was loved by the players and gave the team optimsim, the interim manager was always going to be nothing more than a lame duck unless he could somehow exceed expectations and bring this flawed squad a trophy.
Well, after being knocked out by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals, that's all over for the Merengues. Arbeloa is almost certainly gone, and Florentino Perez and Real Madrid are being linked to the biggest managers in the world. After what happened to Xabi Alonso, Perez wants to bring in more well known, elite coaches to the fold, and the biggest name linked is Jurgen Klopp, who appears to be the top target for Real in the early going.
Real Madrid have been waiting to see if Klopp will reach out to them after seeing all the rumors of their interest in him, because they want to know that he is interested in being a manager again after leaving that role with Liverpool due to burnout to pursue a major executive role with the Red Bull group.
Jurgen Klopp has his eyes elsewhere
According to a report from Jose Felix Diaz of Diario AS, Jurgen Klopp is interested in coaching, but he has his eyes on the German national team. That is his dream job, as he wants to coach his country to glory. Zinedine Zidane, one of Real's dream targets to get back with, is going to be coaching France, and it looks like Klopp's desires are similar to that of the Real Madrid legend.
And Klopp could get that job pretty soon, too. Julian Nagelsmann has tanked his stock in world football and has done a shocking job with the German national team thus far. It's not like the Germans have been doing so great over the past few years and are trending worse without Toni Kroos in midfield, but the way Nagelsmann has conducted himself in press conference with arrogance and praising his own flawed tactics has caused frustration among German supporters - and even contemplation that his accomplishments with the financially powered, low pressure RB Leipzig and Hoffenheim clubs were overrated.
So Klopp has his opening with Germany, and Real Madrid is, therefore, not a high priority interest for him. He does not appear to be interested in Real Madrid at this time. Now, that could change in the future, but Florentino Perez will have to move on from the former Dortmund and Liverpool coach as his top target and instead move down the list. Jose Mourinho, anyone?
