Real Madrid's highest priority this summer is to sign a new central defender. The club is expecting the departures of David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger in the summer leaving the squad thin at the back and if they hope to bounce back from disappointing back-to-back seasons the club needs to bring in reinforcements to help the squad. The club has drawn up a list of center-back targets but unfortunately, their number one target is now off the table.

As officially announced by Borussia Dortmund on X, defender Nico Schlotterbeck has signed a new contract until 2031 locking down his future with the German club for the long haul, a major blow to Real Madrid's summer transfer plans.

Schlotterbeck is now officially off the table

Real Madrid have long viewed Schlotterbeck as their top defensive target and it's understandable why. The 26-year-old has all the attributes to be the next great center-back at Los Blancos. He's tall, extremely quick, good on the ball, and is a threat from set pieces, which is becoming increasingly more important in the modern game. He also brings an intensity and aggression, similar to what Sergio Ramos used to add back in the day.

Schlotterbeck's signing would have completely transformed the backline. Partnering him with Eder Militao would have been the next great center-back partnership at Los Blancos and would have brought the defensive stability that has been lacking over the last two seasons but for Real Madrid, that dream is now over.

The club will now have to turn their attention to other names on their list as they scramble to find their perfect signing this summer. Other names like Liverpool's Ibrahima Konate, Tottenham's Micky van de Ven, and Como's Jacobo Ramon are all other names on Real Madrid's shopping list ahead of the summer transfer window, with one of them now seemingly in line for a move to the Bernabeu which may not have been on their horizon weeks ago.

It's now down to Real Madrid to decide which option is the best for what they are looking for and closest to Schlotterbeck. Konate brings experience, van de Ven brings pace and physicality, and Jacobo Ramon brings load of potential following his successful season at Como after being sold to the Italian side by Los Blancos. Each also brings their own price tag, Konate will be available on a free transfer, van de Ven could cost close to €100 million but with Tottenham on the cusp of relegation that price tag would surely come down should Spurs get relegated, and Real Madrid hold a €8 million buy-back clause with Jacobo Ramon. Real Madrid's summer has just become that much more complicated and they need to make sure they make the right signing to not risk setting themselves back for years.
