Real Madrid are planning a major squad overhaul this summer and have made it clear their number one priority is signing a tempo controlling central midfielder. The club has desperately been lacking in that area of the pitch since Toni Kroos' retirement in 2024 and believe that sorting out that position first will help all the other pieces of the rebuild fall into place. Real Madrid have drawn up a long wish list of signings this summer, and for one of their targets in particular the club has received a positive update, but have also been put on high alert by another European giant.
As being reported by Florian Plettenberg on X, Enzo Fernandez leaving Chelsea this summer is now a real possibility, with new Manchester City boss Enzo Maresca desperate to reunite with the player as he views Enzo as the type of player the City squad currently lacks. Real Madrid and PSG also remain highly interested in the midfielder this summer as it looks like a fight between the big boys over his signature will be the topic of the summer.

Enzo Fernandez has long been a topic at Real Madrid and it is understandable why. Not only is the situation at Chelsea less than ideal following a 10th place finish this season, he is the exact profile of player Real Madrid are looking for. He's still only 25-years-old, has a wide passing range, high midfield IQ, can make plays from anywhere, can be a goal threat, and adds an intensity that the midfield has been lacking since the departure of Casemiro in 2022.
Enzo hasn't been shy about his desires to one day pull on the iconic all white kit of Real Madrid and with the interest being mutal from both the player and the club, the stars could finally align for Enzo to end up at the Bernabeu or will he end up at the Etihad instead?
The Argentine had a strong time under boss Enzo Maresca during his time at Chelsea, captaining the team when they won the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup last summer, and was a key piece of Maresca's system and with the new era being ushered in at Manchester City this summer, the two reuniting would makes sense if Maresca wants to get his time at Manchester City off to a good start, and with the rumors of Real Madrid also being interested in Rodri, he could be the replacement for the Spaniard if he were to end up at Real Madrid instead of Enzo.
Chelsea paid €120 million for Enzo following the 2022 World Cup and would like to get somewhere around that figure should they sell him this summer. All signs are pointing to the Argentine leaving but with Xabi Alonso arriving there is still the chance he could stay at Stamford Bridge as he is the exact kind of player Xabi Alonso looks to build his system around. If Real Madrid are serious about bouncing back from the last two disasterous seasons, then they better be prepared to open their checkbook and take the fight to Manchester City for Enzo's signature or they risk getting set back further than they already are.
