When Xabi Alonso was announced as Real Madrid's new manager following the departure of Carlo Ancelotti, many were expecting a new era to be ushered in at Real Madrid. And in the beginning it looked like Alonso was taking Real to a new level, winning 14 of their first 15 games. But the wheels quickly started falling; a run of poor form and losses in big games led to Xabi Alonso's sacking, which lasted only seven months in charge.
The club has since appointed Castilla manager Alvaro Arbeloa as interim manager, giving him until the end of the season to see if he's capable of being a candidate for the permanent job. However, recent reports have stated the dressing room doesn't view Arbeloa as the man to turn the team around, like they were hoping for.
As a result, Real have been keeping tabs on a number of managers as they look for the perfect option to come in and bring the team back to their best. Jürgen Klopp has been linked to Los Blancos the most; however, the German has said he's happy in his current role with the Red Bull clubs. He's still on the list, but the club is keeping its eyes on a number of other candidates, and one in particular would cause a meltdown in the footballing world should he join Los Blancos in the summer.
Real Madrid consider controversial approach for ex-Barcelona manager
As reported by Speedline (via Topskills Sports UK), Real Madrid are eyeing Paris Saint-Germain and former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique, viewing the Spaniard as a "strong fit" to be their new man in charge this summer. There have been conflicting reports surrounding his future with the French club, and he could ultimately be available in the summer.
Enrique took charge of Barcelona from 2014-2017, winning a treble during the 14/15 season and establishing himself as a top coach in Europe in his first season with the club. He's a Barca legend from his time at the club, so if he were to switch sides and join Real, it wouldn't go down well with the Camp Nou fanbase.
Many often forget Enrique actually played for Los Blancos from 1991-1996 before joining Barcelona as a player from 1996-2004, so technically he was a Merengue first.
Enrique's PSG side currently sits second in Ligue 1 following their sextuple-winning season, but rumors of uncertainty have been swirling all season. He is no doubt the kind of manager Real need right now because he is able to manage all the egos in the dressing room.
However, how he would get on with Kylian Mbappe again following their time together at PSG would be interesting to see should the two be reunited at the Bernabeu. He suggested the Parisians benefited from his departure.
