Real Madrid terribly lost to Arsenal 3-0 in the quarter-finals of the Champions League at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.

Two brilliant free kicks from Declan Rice and a goal from Mikel Merino made Tuesday a horrible night for Real Madrid, and the loss was more than thoroughly deserved.

In the first half, Real Madrid looked very threatening when breaking in numbers after winning possession, but they struggled to build out from the back due to Arsenal's well-drilled structure.

The second half was a completely different story, as Arsenal defended really well and did not let Real Madrid anywhere near their box. And they also scored three great goals.

The second leg is at the Santiago Bernabeu on April 16, in eight days time. But it probably does not matter anymore.

Here are the player ratings from the match:

GK Thibaut Courtois

Some absolutely brilliant saves in the first half, including a double-save in the closing stages of the half to keep Real Madrid level. Nothing he could have done about Declan Rice's wonderful free kicks, no chance. If it was not for him, Real Madrid would have conceded six. Rating: 7

RB Fede Valverde

Struggled to deal with Martinelli on some occasions, but did win the other duels. Good game that would have been even more problematic with Lucas Vazquez on the pitch. Rating: 5.5

CB Raul Asencio

Some great sliding challenges to keep the ball out. Was Real Madrid's best defender on the night, but that was not a difficult task to achieve. Rating: 5.5

CB Antonio Rudiger

Struggled with Arsenal's press sometimes and struggled defensively all night. Rating: 5

LB David Alaba

Struggled so much with Bukayo Saka's pace and technique. Looked a foot slow in every single duel. Gave away the foul on Saka that led to Rice's first free kick. Needed to be hooked at half time but stayed on. Made a good goal-line clearance. Don't know how he survived this long without getting subbed off. Rating: 3.5

RM Rodrygo Goes

Worked hard defensively, but was not able to generate much going forward in the first half. Was not involved much in the second half. Rating: 4.5

CM Luka Modric

Controlled proceedings when allowed. Could not do much to contain Saka. Rating: 5

CM Eduardo Camavinga

Great first half after a shaky start to the game. A lot of crucial challenges. Easily Real Madrid's best player for 93 minutes, before getting a red card. Maybe their only good outfield player. Rating: 6

LM Jude Bellingham

Had to help out Alaba so many times in the first half, but was unsuccessful on occasion. Also played a lovely through ball to Kylian Mbappe, who should have buried the shot into the net. Fouled Saka before the second free kick Rating: 5

CF Kylian Mbappe

Mbappe missed Real Madrid's best chance of the game, shooting right at David Raya instead of going towards the far side. Created danger in the first half. Did nothing in the second half. Rating: 4.5

CF Vinicius Jr

Did not do much in the first half. Some of his decisions were a bit dull. Horrible passing. Horrible match. Horrible everything. Rating: 4

Substitutions

RB Lucas Vazquez

Just the fact that he got on the pitch is shocking. Rating: 5

LB Fran Garcia

Don't know how he did not come on sooner. Rating: 5

RW Brahim Diaz

Nothing of note. Rating: 5
