Real Madrid lost 1-2 to Arsenal at the Santiago Bernabeu in the second leg of the Champions League quarterfinal. They bow out of the Champions League in disappointing fashion as they did not play well enough even at their own ground.

Real Madrid had the lion's share of possession for the entirety of the match, but were not able to generate chances even slightly for themselves. Crosses, corners, and nothing else.

Thibaut Courtois was called into action to save a Bukayo Saka penalty, before conceding to him for the second time in the tie in the second half.

Immediately after, Vinicius Jr was able to pressure William Saliba into giving away possession and scored a goal.

Real Madrid were not able to generate any chances and lost the game when Martinelli sealed it for Arsenal.

GK Thibaut Courtois

Great penalty save, and another brilliant save on a Gabriel Martinelli shot in the first half. Player of the tie for Real Madrid. Rating: 7.5

RB Lucas Vazquez

A decent shift, but so many unnecessary cosses. Not really his fault, but also not. Infuriating shots from long range, especially when Fede Valverde was wide open. Not the worst performance, though. Rating: 6

CB Raul Asencio

Gave away a penalty in the first few minutes, although it seemed soft. Great last-ditch challenges. Rating: 6.5

CB Antonio Rudiger

Unnecessary fouls and a really bad pass to give Arsenal a really big chance. OK otherwise. Rating: 6

LB David Alaba

Still do not understand why he played. He was one of the worst players on the pitch. Alaba had so much to do with Bukayo Saka on the right in the first leg and wasn't able to. Nothing changed this time around. Rating: 5

DM Aurelien Tchouameni

Apart from a few misplaced passes, Tchouameni was great. Defensively he was incredibly crucial, so many last-ditch challenges and recoveries. Real Madrid missed him in the first leg. Rating: 7

CM Fede Valverde

Had a good game defensively but also played Saka onside in Arsenal's goal. He was good otherwise, passed the ball well but needed to do a bit more. Rating: 6

CM Jude Bellingham

Defended well and went forward with some really good darting runs, however was let down by his teammates' decision-making. Rating: 7

RW Rodrygo

Defended really well, but lacked the bite in attack. Did not provide even remotely close to what was needed from him, bar a few good corners. Rating: 5.5

CF Kylian Mbappe

A disappointing showing from Mbappe. Real Madrid needed him, and instead of trying to go down easily, he did not do much. Did not do enough. Got injured and was substituted for Brahim Diaz. Rating: 5

LW Vinicius Jr

Scored Real Madrid's first goal against Arsenal in their history, but he was not good at all in the first half. Pressed well and defended more than before, but not enough. Rating: 7

Substitutions

Fran Garcia

Came on for David Alaba, but should have started. Rating: 5

Dani Ceballos

Another player who should have started. Tried to calm things down in midfield. Rating: 5

Endrick

A surprise substitution, played on the right but did not do much. Rating: 5

Luka Modric

Rating: 5

Brahim Diaz

Takes too many touches so many times. Rating: 5
