Real Madrid are at a bit of a crossroads as far as upgrading their squad further goes. They started the summer transfer window hot and made three necessary defensive upgrades for Jose Mourinho by signing free agent center back Ibrahima Konate, Inter Milan right back Denzel Dumfries, and Chelsea left back Marc Cucurella.

But now that they need to sign a top center midfielder to help rebuild that area of the squad, Real Madrid are running into the financial reality that if they want to sign an actual major upgrade like Enzo Fernandez, they will need to make a substantial sale.

Although current starting No. 6 Aurelien Tchouameni's name is being floated around in transfer rumors, Eduardo Camavinga, for months, has been the main player kicked around for an exit, and even though he does not want to go, it seems like Mourinho is set on sanctioning his sale.

Real Madrid are taking a big transfer risk

Now, Matteo Moretto of MARCA is reporting, via Madrid Xtra, that Jose has indeed given the green light for the Frenchman's sale this summer transfer window. Mourinho is not convinced by his quality, but there is already another top European club that is.

Premier League title contenders Manchester City have become something of a yearly Champions League rival for Real Madrid, and Moretto reports that they have already begun direct talks over Eduardo Camavinga.

Man City spent over 100 million pounds on Nottingham Forest's breakout No. 8 Elliot Anderson, but they want one more top midfielder. After missing out on Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali, who joined Tottenham Hotspur for exactly 100 million pounds, Man City are now focusing on Camavinga, who is still 23 years of age.

Although Camavinga has not impressed Jose Mourinho and has shown little growth since joining Real Madrid in 2021, he is a two time Champions League winner and has a lot of raw talent. Real Madrid may not be able to sell him for his full market value, not even to Manchester City, and at a club like Man City, he could blossom and burn Real Madrid badly in the Champions League.

For all his flaws, Camavinag has shown in his favored No. 8 role that he can make a big difference at the top level, and he still has years to grow. Real Madrid need to sell someone to sign a better fit for what they need in midfield as a No. 6, but selling him to Manchester City runs the risk of Cama becoming a true superstar for years to come at a direct Champions League rival.
