Real Madrid fans have always talked about Arda Guler as a brilliant player with a lot of potential, someone who can definitely mark an era at Real Madrid in the future. However, these last few months have already shown that it is no longer just the future which Guler is targeting at Real Madrid, but also the present.
Guler started a lot of games for Real Madrid last season, but even then, it seems like now he has seen an even bigger improvement as a football player. Guler's performances have improved for Real Madrid this season, and he is already playing like someone who has been at the club for a very long time. That, from that angle, is very good to see, and hopefully that continues.
However, even that is the biggest revelation for Real Madrid's season so far. It is actually something much simpler. It is the return of Eder Militao from injury. Militao made his long-awaited return from injury in the 4-1 win against Sevilla, and it was very good to see him play again.
Eder Militao's return is a much bigger positive than Real Madrid fans think
When he was at his best, Militao was easily Real Madrid's best defender by some distance. With Ibrahima Konate at the club now, the battle is much tighter but even then, the Brazilian has a fair shot at still coming out on top. Obviously, it wouldn't have been fair to expect that from him in his first game in such a long time, but it is certainly a very good feeling to have him back.
Real Madrid will have to be incredibly cautious with the player again because of the unfortunate injury history that he has. They would also have to think about managing his minutes whenever he is game fit as well. Real Madrid fans probably should not expect him to play too many minutes in these upcoming weeks.
Even in the minutes he will play, Militao is such a welcome sight for this Real Madrid team. Real Madrid still have some really good defenders in Konate and Dean Huijsen, but Militao is probably the most complete one they have, and it will be really crucial for the club to have him add to the depth in the business end of the season.
Real Madrid have struggled so much with injuries in this department for a few years now, so to have him back would mean having, at the very least, an extra body to keep the defence more stable and safe from injuries. They have five centre-backs in total, four of whom are still very, very good. Raul Asencio is a decent backup, but having these four centre-backs in Militao, Rüdiger, Huijsen, and Konate, Real Madrid have a very good core that they can rotate from.
Obviously, fans have yet to see Militao play with Konate, which would be something that could work out really well despite both of them being better on the right side.
It is also worth looking at from a personal angle because he is a player who has suffered for such a long time with injuries and bad fitness problems. To have him back playing, to have him playing at Real Madrid once again, is going to be a relieving feeling for him. Hopefully, Militao is able to remain fit for the foreseeable future so that he is able to build some much-needed continuity and fitness at Real Madrid.
