After months of sitting on their hands and pondering whether or not to make a move, Real Madrid have finally made the desicion to go all in for Manchester City midfielder Rodri. The club view him as the final piece to their puzzle to get back to the top of Europe with Jose Mourinho pushing strongly for the move. However, Real Madrid's plans may have just been hit by a major stumbling block which could have a big effect on how things progress from here.
As announced by Manchester City on X, Rodri is set to be sidelined following undergoing a successful minor back surgery following the conclusion of the World Cup after feeling discomfort for quite some time. In a statement released by the club they went on to say:
"Manchester City can confirm Rodri has undergone successful minor back surgery.Manchester City
The midfielder had been feeling discomfort for some time but has now undergone a procedure to address the issue and will now begin a short period of rehabilitation."
What does Rodri's injury mean for Real Madrid?
The Premier League side are hopeful that not only will his recovery time be short, but also that they are able to tie down their midfielder to a new contract amid his strong links to Real Madrid. Rodri is out of contract next summer but Real Madrid seem to be closing in on a deal to sign the World Cup Golden Ball winner in the next couple weeks following his standout tournament.
What exactly this injury means for the prospect of Rodri making a move to the Bernabeu this summer remains unknown but it is definitely not ideal to say the least. Let's assume a move does get completed starting the season with Rodri injured isn't what Real Madrid would have wanted. He is everything the team has been missing for the last few years and was expected to slot right into the starting lineup but now that could be put on halt.
While it has been deemed just a 'minor operation' back injuries are always risky and have the potential to completely change someone's career if they suffer a setback or another injury and with Rodri showing some signs of dealing with injuries recently, a back injury could be unsettling from Real Madrid's perspective.
In the end all signs point to Rodri ending up at Real Madrid this summer which is good news however starting the season rehabbing an injury isn't the start to the season fans would be hoping for with their marquee midfield signing with prospects of winning the Champions League at the forefront of everyone's mind.
