Real Madrid are descending into the same dysfunction that mired PSG during Kylian Mbappe's time at the club, and it is hard for Madridistas to feel that the Frenchman is not the common denominator when the extent of the issues was nowhere near this bad in 2023/24 and before - and Real were actually winning trophies.
Florentino Perez has identified the problem, in his mind, as the need for a strong character as the manager. He wants someone who can relate positively to the players, but it seems like his No. 1 pick is actually also someone who is not afraid to crack all the eggs in the basket to make the spiciest omelet known to humanity.
Alvaro Arbeloa will be out at the end of the season no matter what, and the transfer rumor mill continues to point to a reunion with Jose Mourinho. He coached Real Madrid out of a dark era in the late 2000s and early 2010s, setting the scene for the Champions Leagues of the 2010s while competing head to head with the greatest ever Barcelona side under Pep Guardiola.
Jose Mourinho deal is all but done
The Mourinho hiring is starting to appear imminent for Real Madrid. Per chief journalist Jose Felix Diaz of Diario AS, via the Madrid Zone, it is only a matter of time before Jose Mourinho is officially confirmed as Real Madrid manager. JFD says that the deal will be done once the 2025/26 season officially ends. And other reports are circulating from Portugal that Mourinho's current club, Benfica, are already resigned to losing him while his agent Jorge Mendes personally negotiates the deal with Florentino Perez. Benfica are said to themselves be looking for Mou's replacement right now.
Mourinho is a huge gamble. He is an amazing manager, and though he has not won at the elite level since his second stint at Chelsea, class is permanent. And the Portuguese coach is one of the few people who understands the inner workings of the enterprise that is Real Madrid. More importantly, to Perez, he is one of those coaches who understands the dark side of humanity in competitive sport and can match egos with people like Kylian Mbappe who think they are big shots but are really minnows in comparison to what Mou is capable of.
Real Madrid are closing in on Mourinho, and, at this point, it seems that all that is left is the announcement officially confirming him as the next coach.
