Real Madrid's next signing after Nico Paz is painfully obvious

The most obvious signing for Real Madrid to make to upgrade their squad this summer transfer window is to bring in a player they already own and formally anoint him a first teamer at the Santiago Bernabeu, because Nico Paz has more than earned that opportunity.

Paz has been arguably the most valuable player in world football to his team, carrying a solid Como side without star power into the Champions League convesation, outperforming big clubs in Italian football on the big stage with bravery.

It is not just the goals and assists with Paz, too. For nine million euros, Real Madrid can buy back a player with, yes, 18 Serie A goal contributions from midfield but also elite ball carrying and ball winning statistics as a bona fide, elite midfielder.

Real Madrid need defense

Real Madrid, though, need more than just midfielders. They need defenders. For years, Carlo Ancelotti was telling Florentino Perez about the need for a top center back, but Flo waffled on that and has only since signed Dean Hujisen last summer - a talented but young defender who may not even have the talent to be a true, undisputed starter at Real Madrid for a decade.

That is the kin of player Real Madrid need to sign next after shoring up the Nico Paz return. After securing Paz, Real Madrid need to address the center back position, and they need to go after someone with real quality who can start immediately. Younger is better for their future upside and having someone entrenched next to the now injury prone Eder Militao, but quality is the biggest deciding factor here.

The most intriguing name who fits the bill is, of couse, another Borussia Dortmund grad in Nico Schlotterbeck. He is the best defender to come from the BVB since Mats Hummels - and they have produced a fair bit of quality players there, like Waldemar Anton currently and even Manuel Akanji, who has met Real Madrid in the Champions League before while at Manchester City.

Schlotterbeck makes mistakes, yes, but he is such a talent. He even had links to Real Madrid at Freiburg before joining Dortmund due to his speed, physical strength, and unique ball playing ability. Schlotty can play on an island with aggression and offer that something extra, which is the profile Real Madrid want from their center backs; they do not want scared cowards. Shlotterbeck or any top CB is the obvious move Madrid must make after the even more obvious decision to bring Paz back.
