For Real Madrid, the new season hasn't quite gotten off on the right foot like many were expecting. With Jose Mourinho back in charge and a number of new arrivals in the summer, many were expecting Real Madrid to be a completely different team from what we've seen over the past two seasons; however, that has been far from the case.

The team hasn't looked up to the task, failing to put in any convincing performances that would be worthy of giving them shouts to win major silverware this season. Los Blancos have already suffered losses to Real Betis and Atletico Madrid in their first eight matches, as well as needing to rely on stoppage-time winners against Espanyol and Elche. Real already sit six points behind league leaders Barcelona, and if we go off of past seasons, Real Madrid's slow start could be a bad sign of what's to come.

Real Madrid are headed down a dangerous road with their poor form

So far through the first seven league matches of the season, Real Madrid have grabbed 15 points, which is the lowest mark at this stage since the 20/21 season, when they only grabbed 13 points through the first seven matches. 20/21 is remembered as one of the worst seasons by Real Madrid fans, as it was the first trophyless term since 2010, and with the trajectory Real Madrid are on so far this year, they could be on course to replicate what happened six years ago.

Real ended up finishing second by just two points that season and did make it to the Champions League semi-finals before losing to Chelsea, who ultimately won the Champions League, however it is still remembered as one of the worst seasons by Real Madrid fans.

So far this season, Real Madrid haven't looked much better than the early days of the 20/21 season, and Jose Mourinho must use this extended international break to sort out what has been going wrong and fix or Real Madrid could be headed for a third consecutive trophyless season.

Real Madrid have a number of tough matches when they return from the international break, including a Champions League clash with Roma, as well as the first El Clasico of the season.

These next matches will prove to be crucial for Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid. One more slip-up in the league and their title hopes are surely done and dusted, given Barcelona's form, and with teams like PSG and Bayern Munich flying like they are, the Champions League looks like a far-out dream as well.

It's somewhat ironic that the last time Real Madrid had pink on their home kit in the 20/21 season, they went trophyless, and now this season, once again with pink on the home kit, Los Blancos seem on course to be going trophyless once again, already setting down the early markers that this season could be one to forget for Real Madrid fans.
