Real Madrid spent almost the whole summer on the hunt for their perfect Toni Kroos replacement in midfield and came away empty handed. With the midfield still showing signs early this season that it is still lacking something, the club will surely go back into the market next summer, and one of their top options could fall right into their hands as a free agent, Liverpool's Alexis Mac Allister.
While speaking to the media this week ahead of Liverpool's Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid, the midfielder all but confirmed he will be leaving the Premier League side at the end of his contract.
Mac Allister went on to say: "I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract, which makes me very, very sad because everyone can see I give 100% for this football club every single day in training.
"I always give my best. I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts because they deserve it; it makes me happy, but at the same time it makes me sad because I didn't get mine.
"The fans don’t need to worry. I will give 100% until the last day I’m here."
Alexis Mac Allister could fall right into Real Madrid's hands
The Argentine's contract is set to expire in June of 2028, and as we have seen over the last few summers, Real Madrid love a free transfer, especially from Liverpool, and if Los Blancos are serious about strengthening their midfield, they should be all over Mac Allister's contract situation.
Mac Allister is exactly what Real have been searching for, and with him possibly falling right into the clubs hands as a free agent, Real Madrid can't pass up this opportunity.
The midfielder is the focal point of Argentina's midfield, and while he may have somewhat lost his prominence, he is still a top player who could come in and transform Real Madrid's midfield.
He's good on the ball, has a pitch-wide passing range, the ability to speed up or slow down the game as he wishes, and will track back and do the defensive dirty work Real Madrid's midfield has been lacking in recent years.
Partnering Mac Allister with Fede Valverde would be the most likely option, with the Argentine occupying the deeper role, giving Valverde more freedom to venture forward while also tracking back to do his defensive work. With Jude Bellingham and Arda Guler in front of them occupying the creative roles, Real Madrid may finally find the perfect balance they have been looking for for years.
Should Real Madrid wait till the summer of 2028 to grab Mac Allister? He will be 28 years old by then, which could be a turn-off for Real Madrid, as the club is surely looking for someone slightly younger whom they can have in their midfield for more than a decade. However, bringing in the Argentine could still prove to be useful for Real Madrid, as they still can't solve their midfield headaches.
