Real Madrid are not shy with free transfers. Some of the most important players in the squad have been brought in without a transfer fee paid to their former clubs over the last few seasons, showing Real Madrid's patience in the market.

Players like Antonio Rudiger and most recently Kylian Mbappe have arrived at the club as free transfers and have become some of the first names on the team sheet for every game. This free transfer strategy has allowed the club to bring in some players who also play key roles not in the starting lineup, and according to reports, Real Madrid is eyeing a move for one of the Premier League's top defenders, who will be available on a free transfer this summer.

Real Madrid still eyeing move for Liverpool veteran defender

As reported by 90min, Real Madrid views the potential transfer of Virgil van Dijk as still very much alive. The Liverpool captain is on course to become a free agent this summer and could be a short-term option for Real Madrid as they scout for long-term centre-back options.

Real Madrid have had to deal with a number of injuries to their central defenders over the last number of seasons, especially this season. Eder Militao is currently sidelined with a season-ending ACL injury and centre-backs Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba have also had their share of injuries this season, which leaves Raul Asencio as the only fit natural centre-back in the first-team squad.

This is where Virgil van Dijk could come into play. The Dutchman is out of contract with Liverpool in the summer and stalling contract negotiations have left his future with the Premier League side in doubt. At 33 years old, van Dijk would bring a solid veteran experience to the backline, which could be of benefit to Real Madrid for a season or two.

As mentioned earlier van Dijk will be available on a free transfer in the summer which would save Real Madrid any money that would have to be spent on a transfer fee allowing the club to spend that money elsewhere.
