Tottenham Hotspur are in serious relegation trouble at the moment and currently sit 16th in the Premier League, just five points above the relegation zone. Anything can happen in the crazy world of football, and if Spurs get relegated, it could cause a domino effect of star players asking to leave, which could play right into Real Madrid's hands.
The Athletic reports that Micky van de Ven, among other Real targets, is among the Tottenham players who are almost 100% guaranteed to ask to leave the club should they get relegated from the Premier League this season.
Spurs relegation opens door for Madrid's Van de Ven move
There haven't been many bright spots at Tottenham this season, but Van de Ven is one of them. The Dutchman has been far and away their best player and is Spurs' second-highest goal scorer this season with 4 goals. Real have been linked with a move for the defender on a number of occasions in the last few months, and with everything going wrong at Tottenham, now could be the time for Los Blancos to put themselves ahead and grab the defender before another club gets the chance.
Van de Ven, dubbed "world-class" by Jamie O'Hara, arrived at Spurs in the summer of 2023 and quickly established himself as one of, if not the best, defender in the Premier League, and he brings everything to the table that Real look for in their defenders. He's tall, extremely fast, aggressive, a great leader, and great both in the air and with the ball at his feet. His 6'4 height makes him a threat on set pieces, which are becoming increasingly important in the modern game.
The defender is currently valued at around €50 million, but should Spurs get relegated, there's no way they would be able to get a fee close to that, meaning Real could grab the defender in an incredible cut-price deal, securing the future of their backline for years to come.
Among the other players who could look to leave Tottenham should they get relegated are Real Madrid targets Cristian Romero and Pedro Porro. A move for Romero could be a possibility, similar to Van de Ven. Los Blancos desperately need a new central defender.
That's why Porro doesn't feel necessary, as Alexander-Arnold is back to full fitness and has re-established himself as the starting right-back, so a move for the Spaniard is less likely than the other two.
Whether or not the club will end up signing any of the remains unknown at the moment, but we all know that Real loves signing players from Tottenham, with Luka Modric and Gareth Bale cementing themselves as legends at the Bernabeu.
