Real Madrid are in for one of the biggest rebuild's in recent history this summer. The squad is in desperate need of reinforcements and with new players arriving, a number of players are expected to depart to make room, with a number of defenders expected to move on to the next step in their careers. Dani Carvajal, David Alaba, and potentially Raul Asencio and Fran Garcia are all expected to depart the Bernabeu, however, one defender that many expected to be departing has just agreed a deal to keep him at Los Blancos for next season.
As being reported by theMadridZone on X, Antonio Rudiger has accepted Real Madrid's offer for a one year renewal, keeping the defender at the Bernabeu for next season. The player originally wanted a two year extension but he accepted the club's policy of renewing players over the age of 30 for just one year at a time. The defender is eager to play under Jose Mourinho next season, hence his willingness to accept the offer.
Rudiger to stay despite veteran mass exodus this summer
The German has been a loyal servant to the club since his arrival in the summer of 2022 as a free agent from Chelsea, stepping up big when called on and doing whatever it may be that the coach asks him to do. Rudiger was a key figure in the incredible 23/24 season when he became an unexpected starter in the wake of Eder Militao's torn ACL early in the season and he created a surprisingly rock solid center-back partnership with Nacho, playing a major role in the impressive La Liga and Champions League double that season.
Rudiger has continued to step up in wake of defensive injuries to Dean Huijsen and Eder Militao and has continued to put in solid performances for a 33-year-old who is starting to come towards the end of his career.
Despite his solid form Rudiger obviously can't be a starter for much longer at his age so as a result the club is expected to bring in one or two new central defenders in the summer, however that doesn't necessarily diminish Rudiger's importance in the squad. With the squad getting younger and younger Rudiger is one of few veteran leaders left in the team, which is something the squad has been lacking following previous departures, so keeping him for one more year not only for his reliability but also his leadership is a good call made by the club.
With Jose Mourinho expected to come in, Rudiger is the kind of player Jose likes to have in his squad, an experienced veteran, with a winning mentality that brings an intesity to the team that is somewhat lacking in the modern game. Knowing Jose and how his mind works Rudiger could end up being a starter next season but even if he's not, he will no doubt have a key place in the managers squad next season.
