Alvaro Arbeloa won over Real Madrid fans in his side's 6-1 thrashing of AS Monaco on Tuesday in the Champions League. A strong second half showing against Levante in a 2-0 win on the weekend had lifted the mood after a tough start to his reign as caretaker manager.
The victory against the French outfit was one of Los Blancos' best displays this season and Arbeloa deserved much of the credit. He made some important tactical decisions that led to such a dominant outing at the Estadio Bernabeu.
That included using Federico Valverde and Eduardo Camavinga at full-backs and the pair were two of the best performers on the night. Especially Camavinga who many felt looked right at home at left-back and was able to link up superbly with Vinicius Junior.
Arbeloa on plans for Real Madrid pair
Valverde and Camavinga's preferred positions are in midfield but they are two of Madrid's most versatile players. Their performances against Monaco were just what Arbeloa needed after opting to use them in makeshift roles.
The Madrid coach was asked about his decision and he suggested he'd be willing to continue using the duo at full-back. He told reporters ahead of the game against Villarreal on Saturday (via Madrid Xtra):
"Players out of their positions? What can I say is all the players want to help the team. Team above all. Camavinga, Valverde... they give no problems. They're sensational, always up to help. They're versatile, they can play in multiple spots."

Valverde and Camavinga aren't new to the full-back position, and Arbeloa's predecessor, Xabi Alonso, had called upon Valverde to play at right-back many times this season. But this was the first time both had started on either flank of a back four this season.
It's a massive boost for Arbeloa because he knows he has options depending on the opposition. Whether he will continue with the pair against Villarreal remains to be seen but why change something that worked so well.
Real Madrid squad vs Villarreal revealed

Madrid's matchday squad for their encounter with Villarreal in La Liga tomorrow has been announced. Both Camavinga and Valverde are included and there are only five high-profile absentees.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, who Arbeloa reportedly wants to leave, Antonio Rudiger, Eder Militao, Ferland Mendy, and Aurelien Tchouameni will all miss the trip to the Estadio de la Ceramica. Rodrygo is back after a spell on the sidelines which is a huge bonus amid his return to form over the past few months.

It's a huge game for Los Merengues because they are just a point behind leaders Barcelona. A win over the Yellow Submarine means Arbeloa's men move ahead of the Catalans for at least a day with Barca not in action until Sunday when they face Oviedo.
