Real Madrid want to replace Luka Modric with transfer exceeding €100m

Real Madrid have the seemingly-impossible task of replacing Luka Modric. However, they could do so with a blockbuster €100m+ transfer.

A big reason why Real Madrid have maintained their dominance in Europe over the last two decades is their ability to remain forward-thinking. Very rarely do they stumble and it's because they always have backup plans in place before they are necessary.

So, it comes as no surprise to see Real Madrid linked with young midfielders for the future. After all, they lost Toni Kroos at the end of last season and they are due to lose Luka Modric, who is also nearing retirement age.

However, who could fill the void left behind by Luka Modric? Well, Real Madrid have one target in mind.

According to a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, Real Madrid has chosen their Luka Modric successor, as Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. However, a transfer will not be easy, considering Leverkusen could demand over €100m for their star player.

Last season, Florian Wirtz emerged as one of the best players in the world. The midfielder was key to the unbeaten season, led by Bayer Leverkusen manager and Real Madrid legend Xabi Alonso.

So, it is obviously in Bayer Leverkusen's best interests to keep Florian Wirtz at the club. He is pivotal to the way Xabi Alonso wishes to play football and a centrepiece in their club culture currently.

There is a growing consensus that Xabi Alonso could be destined to manage Real Madrid, though. After all, he is achieving great things at Bayer Leverkusen and he would only be elevated at Real Madrid.

Anyway, I digress. Regardless of whether or not Xabi Alonso comes back to Real Madrid, it is in the Spanish club's plans to sign one of his best players, Florian Wirtz.

Florian Wirtz is an exceptional and technically-gifted midfielder. He has a great first touch, dribbling ability and a vast range of passing. He would be capable of fulfilling Luka Modric's boots in the long-run.

Of course, it is still far too early to compare Modric to Wirtz. It would be disrespectful to Modric, who is the most glorified Real Madrid player in history, winning everything there is to win on multiple occasions.

However, in terms of ability, Wirtz is up there with the best in the world currently. Ageing at 21 years old, he has an incredible ceiling and one he can reach at Real Madrid.
