Real Madrid are on the hunt for center midfielders after adding Denzel Dumfries and Ibrahima Konate to their ailing defense, as their second biggest need as a team is to sign a player in the middle of the park who can help control the game.
Rodri and Enzo Fernandes are two high profile options for Real Madrid this summer from the Premier League, but the Merengues are not just after the big names. They are also being linked with a young player who broke out this season for a terrible team that WAS in the Premier League but will actually be headed back down to the second division for the 2026/27 season.
It's not every day that Real Madrid sign a player from one of the most dysfunctional clubs in European football, but Jose Felix Diaz of Diario AS reports, via Madrid Xtra, that Real Madrid are pushing to sign Mateus Fernandes from the Hammers this summer transfer window.
Real Madrid are after West Ham star
Fernandes was one of the best all around center midfielders in the Premier League last season. He played great defense, worked hard on both ends of the pitch, started attacks as a progressor, and passed the ball well both progressively and creatively. The young Portuguese player has the makings of being the next great midfielder from the country.
Now, Real Madrid have two much bigger dream targets from Portugal in Vitinha and Joao Neves, but it's a pretty open secret that PSG, now back to back Champions League winners, do not want to sell star players to Real Madrid. And they especially do not want to sell Neves and Vitinha to anybody, as they are two of the best players in the world and irreplaceable bedrocks of their Champions League winning seasons.
Mateus Fernandes is more of an unknown as they are, but there is something else that Real Madrid fans should know about the 21 year old center midfielder. His agent is the very same agent as Vitinha's and Joao Neves's, as the young man is represented by super agent Jorge Mendes.
Real Madrid and Mendes are back on good terms after the hiring of Jose Mourinho, and Mendes will surely want his players at Madrid, especially if they can help make Mourinho look good, too. Fernandes is less high profile than Vitinha and Neves, but that may make Mendes want to see the up and comer in a Real Madrid jersey even more.
