For a number of Real Madrid players this pre-season could be all they have to secure their future at the club or they could end up being potential candidates for sale. Gonzalo could be on the fringes of making the squad but has the best opportunity right now to win over the manager and show what he brings to the table in the attack.
Gonzalo determined to win over The Special One
Fans already know that Gonzalo has everything it takes to play at the highest level for Real Madrid but Jose Mourinho's approval is more important than fans'. The 22-year-old burst onto the scene with Real Madrid during last summer's FIFA Club World Cup, taking home the tournament golden boot while filling in for Kylian Mbappe, earning him a permanent call up to the senior team.
Gonzalo was a regular substitue under Xabi Alonso and put in a number of impressive performances, even grabbing a jaw-dropping hat-trick against Real Betis back in January. However his playing time took a massive hit once Alonso was sacked and Alvaro Arbeloa took over and he never really got enough of an opportunity to keep showcasing his talent.
As a result of his drop in form, although due to lack of playing time, as well as the return of Endrick from loan, the Spaniard has become a potential candidate for sale, with Arbeloa's Fulham as well as a number of Bundesliga clubs showing interest in signing him, however he has no interest in leaving and has shown up to pre-season more motivated than ever to win back his place in the team.
For Gonzalo this is the perfect opportunity to show Mourinho what he brings to the table. Given he wasn't called up by Spain for the World Cup he was one of the first players to arrive for pre-season and will have more time with the manager to win him over and show why he should be included in the squad as the team needs a natural number nine like him if they hope to get back to winning the big trophies this season.
