Roma vs Real Madrid match preview

After a hard-fought, controversial and vital victory on Saturday night, can Real Madrid start to build some serious momentum? At the weekend, los Blancos beat Villarreal 1-0 at the Bernabéu, Yan Diomandé the only scorer, but that does not even begin to scratch the surface.

Vinícius Júnior thought he had made the points secure, celebrating wildly after scoring. However, following VAR review, not only did referee Isidro Díaz de Mera Escuderos disallow the goal, Vini Jr was sent off for yanking Nathan Saliba's hair. Thereafter, down to ten men, Thibaut Courtois was forced into a few saves, but José Mourinho's team held on for three precious points.

This leaves los Merengues six points behind perfect league-leaders Barcelona, having won six out of eight so far, defeated on the road by both Real Betis and Atlético Madrid in the derby. Thus, perhaps the most impressive victory Mourinho has enjoyed since returning to the club has come in the Champions League.

Last month, goals from Kylian Mbappé and then Fede Valvere, the latter punishing some calamitous goalkeeping, saw Real Madrid beat Internazionale 2-1 at home. Having finished 11th and then ninth in the two editions of the league phase so far, los Blancos are determined to do better this time round, so can they claim victory in one of their toughest fixtures in the Eternal City?

As for Roma, this is their first home Champions League match since February 2019, actually winning eight of their last nine at Stadio Olimpico in this competition, albeit these wins were long ago. Nevertheless, under Gian Piero Gasperini, this is a team to be taken seriously. On matchday one, despite taking the lead through Bryan Cristante, the Giallorossi were held to an entertaining 1-1 draw by Fenerbahçe at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium in İstanbul.

Meantime, in Serie A, after four straight wins, Roma have endured back-to-back draws. Nevertheless, on Sunday, after seeing Donyell Malen sent off for a wild challenge, they were delighted to hold Como to a goalless stalemate at Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia.

Having delivered UEFA Conference League glory, the club's first trophy since 2008, Mourinho will receive a hero's welcome back to Rome. On the pitch meantime, this will be a tough encounter for his Real Madrid team, so can they silence Stadio Olimpico?

Roma team news

With usual first-choice Mile Svilar sidelined due to a fractured foot, Pierluigi Gollini will be donning the gloves, while matchday one scorer Bryan Cristante is also out due to a knee injury. Donyell Malen can of course featured, despite his red card on Sunday, while Paulo Dybala was part of the Juventus team beaten in a Champions League Final by Real Madrid in Cardiff in 2017.

Suspended for the next three La Liga matches, expect Vinícius Júnior to feature prominently in the Champions League during this domestic ban. At the back, Antonio Rüdiger will face his former club, partnering Ibrahima Konaté, given that Dean Huijsen, Raúl Asencio and Éder Militão are all injured.

Elsewhere, Denzel Dumfries is poised to displace Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back, with Marc Cucurella and Bernardo Silva also hoping to return to the XI.

  • Real Madrid predicted lineup: Courtois; Dumfries, Konaté, Rüdiger, Cucurella; Valverde, Tchouaméni, Bellingham; Diomandé, Vinícius, Mbappé.
