While Real Madrid fans were ecstatic to see Cristiano Ronaldo fight to keep the ultimate dream alive for at least one more round, they were also devastated for another legend in Luka Modric, whose last World Cup game came at the hands of his former three peat of the Champions League teammate in the Round of 32.
Modric is 40 years old but is still one of the best box to box midfielders in the world, coming off a 2025/26 Serie A season in which he was, incredibly, the best player on AC Milan. While Milan are poor these days, that is still a huge accomplishment for Modric to still be a top, top player for a massive club like the Rossoneri, and many Madridistas feel as though Xabi Alonso and the club made a big mistake by letting Lukita go last summer.
Clearly not finished yet, Modric should still be playing football at the elite European level, and while that puts him on the radar of potentially facing Real Madrid in the future, Madridistas would much rather see a legend of the club excelling in Europe than being off the radar in MLS or the Saudi Pro League (or worse).
Luka Modric is still valued
Ruben Amorim had a terrible tenure at Manchester United, but Milan are hoping that he is at least better than Paulo Fonseca and Max Allegri, making him the latest notable and somewhat uninspiring hire for a team that last captured the Scudetto in 2021/22.
And while Luka Modric is done with World Cups for Croatia, it appears he is still going to be around in Milano. Because, via Fabrizio Romano, the incoming manager Amorim has made it clear that he values Lukita and wants the magical No. 10 around in the north of Italy.
The Portuguese manager said, “I want Modric to stay, I spoke to Luka and if needed… I will go get him in person! I want Modric with us this season."
That is a beautiful way of putting it, and while Ruben Amorim has a lot of work to do to rehab his image in football after how terrible Man United were under him, this is a great way to get back in the good graces, especially of Madridistas after what he was doing to Casemiro. Modric is clearly crucial to Milan and has plenty to give, and Real Madrid fans will love that his new manager is going to keep him around at the top level of European football.
