Real Madrid fans have no love lost for former Atletico Madrid star and Barcelona player Sergio Aguero, but even they will readily admit that despite his needling on his podcasts and in interviews, he was an incredible striker for Atleti, Manchester City, and the Argentina national team and one of the best of his generation, particularly during his prime in the Premier League.
But Aguero is not one of the greatest strikers ever, and there were striker in his generation who were superior to him, including Madrid's very own Karim Benzema. Though the Man City faithful and Premier League only watchers, as well as the usual suspects in Catalunya, are loathe to admit it, even Aguero himself cannot deny Benzema.
When asked which strikers in his time were better than him, Sergio Aguero admitted to three names being above him, via the Madrid Zone. Former Manchester United and Juventus star Carlos Tevez, one of Aguero's Argentina national teammates, made the cut, as did a former Barcelona and Atletico Madrid La Liga winner in Luis Suarez. But finally, Aguero did not hide the fact that the well rounded Benzema was also a superior player to him.
Karim Benzema gets a nod from a hater
Among those who did not maket the cut were current Barcelona star and Bundesliga record breaker Robert Lewandowski, Barcelona and Valencia legend David Villa, former Real Madrid man Gonzalo Higuain, Erling Haaland, and the old Atletico Madrid duo of Fernando Torres and Radamel Falcao.
Honestly, aside from quabbling between Lewandowski and Aguero, Aguero's picks were pretty honest, and it says a lot about the quality of Karim Benzema that a notorious Real Madrid hater and a player who suited up for BOTH clubs that Real despise says that Benzema was the better player than him - and Aguero is definitely someone who thinks highly of himself, since he rated his own play above legends Robert Lewandowski and Fernando Torres.
Of the three players Aguero said are better than him, Real Madrid fans may get locked into a tough debate with Barcelona fans on Suarez vs. Benzema. Suarez may have had the greater peak, especially as a goal scorer, for both Liverpool and Barcelona, but Benzema's 2021/22 Champions League season and Ballon d'Or win is far beyond anything Suarez accomplished in his career - and Benzema had a longer career overall than Suarez, including being a better player here and now in 2026. Benzie may be out of the spotlight in the Saudi Pro League, but even his haters can't forget his legacy.
